By now we all know the benefits of eating superfoods, but here nutritionist Fiona Tuck explains how we can sneak them into our regular skincare and beauty routines for glowing health inside out.

Manuka Honey

The lowdown: This sweet treat has been heralded as one of the top super foods of all times by many natural healthcare practitioners. Honey bees collect nectar from the flowers of the manuka bush native to New Zealand and Western Australia.

Benefits: Due to the properties of the manuka bush, manuka honey’s health claims range from antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidants. It’s also often used to assist wound healing due to its high sugar, high acidic content and low water content.

Use: When it comes bites, blemishes and cold sores, apply a small amount of manuka honey to the inflamed lesion and leave overnight.

For acne skin, mix in the juice of half a lemon with a teaspoon of warm honey and apply to the entire face as a 10-minute antibacterial soothing face mask.

Apple Cider Vinegar

The lowdown: Apple cider vinegar is the result of the fermentation of apple juice to apple cider followed by a second fermentation to apple cider vinegar.

Benefits: Apple cider vinegar retains all the nutritional goodness of the apples from which it was made plus it is fortified with the extra acids and enzymes produced during the two fermentation steps. This makes it a wonderful natural health remedy to assist with digestion and cleansing the body. It can be taken in water or added to salad dressings as an instant health booster and digestive aid. It is also a wonderful skin and hair tonic.

Use: Apple cider vinegar is a good remedy to remove product residue build up in the hair such as gels, sprays and serums. It also works as a natural hair detangler. If apple cider vinegar is used regularly in your hair care routine, it can leave the hair shiny, lustrous and smooth. The vinegar also works by smoothing the cuticle of the hair, which allows light to reflect off of it. You will be looking like Rapunzel before you know it!

Try a hair rinse consisting of 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons cold water. Mix the apple cider vinegar and water together and pour over the hair after shampooing. Comb through the hair and then rinse off with tepid water. No need to use conditioner! Your hair will feel silky soft and look ultra-shiny.

Coconut Oil

The lowdown: Coconut oil is extracted from the meat of matured coconuts. Because of its high saturated fat content it is slow to oxidize and can withstand high cooking temperatures, coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids which work differently in the body and therefore do not have the same “bad fat” connotation as saturated fats.

Benefits: The on-trend oil reportedly assists conditions such as high cholesterol, diabetes, thyroid, brain function and even dementia. It also possesses antibacterial and antiviral properties making it wonderful for detoxification and traditional therapies such as oil pulling.

Use: With so much positive media attention health food stores and supermarkets cannot stock their shelves fast enough. Coconut oil can be used as a body moisturiser, mouth wash and warm oil treatment for the hair and the feet. Is there anything the wondrous coconut cannot do? Well actually yes.

While coconut oil is a fabulous skin softener and emollient it is still a saturated fat. Applying coconut oil to the face can be too occlusive resulting in excess oils and sebum being trapped in the skin. Regular topical application may therefore lead to bumps and congestion, a condition called acne cosmetica. Coconut oil is a great addition to your healthcare routine, but like anything use in moderation and keep to using moisturisers specifically designed for the skin.

When it comes to feet, get 1 tablespoon of warm coconut oil and massage half a tablespoon of the oil onto each foot for an antiviral, nourishing foot treatment. For ultra-soft feet place a plastic bag over each foot and then cotton socks before going to bed. You will wake up with the softest feet ever!
